Beaumont and ACCESS have partnered up to host a Screening Day. The Screening Day will take place at Fordson High School in the gym, on Dec. 14th from 9am-4pm. Beaumont will be providing free heart checks for teens ages 13-18 years old. There are only 400 appointment slots open, which is why it is important for students to register as soon as possible. The link is Beaumont.org/shc
Here are some statistics on the Student Healthy Heart Check program since it began in May 2007:
- 17,492 children in Michigan have been screened
- 1,797 needed some sort of follow up with a doctor
- 207 were advised to stop sports until they follow up with a cardiologist (many from conditions such as Long QT, Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) and other congenital heart conditions)
- 9 have been found with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most serious of all heart issues we are trying to detect
- 5,333 taught hands only CPR and AED awareness (started Sept. 2015)
This type of screening is not typically done for school physicals and sports physicals. Students will need to register to the link on the flyer. We will also be providing free vision and hearing screens for students and adults, with referrals if needed. Beaumont will provide the Cardiologists for the heart screenings and they will be providing blood pressure checks as well. We will have vendors in the gym for guests to check out while they wait for their appointment. The Screening Day is open to all, it does not matter what school they attend. Please share with students, parents and whoever you feel may benefit. I have attached the flyer for your reference. Please let me know if you have any questions.
