Board to review school opening recommendations at special study session

On August 6 at 1 p.m., the Dearborn Board of Education will hold a special study session to review the recommendations of the District’s Reopen Committee. The meeting will be held virtually and in-person at the Administrative Service Center, 18700 Audette, Dearborn. Due to capacity limits created by social distancing requirements, space in the Boardroom is extremely limited for public viewing. Therefore, the public will be able to view the meeting via a live stream on the District’s website, (www.dearbornschools.org), YouTube
channel (https://youtube.com/dpscommdept), and on cable channel 19 (Comcast) and channel 15 (WOW). Community members can submit comments via a Google Form between 8 a.m. and 1:10 p.m. that day. The form can be found at https://bit.ly/DbnEdStudySession8-6-20.
“I want to thank the teachers, nurses, parents, students, administrators, community members, board trustees and all others who took time to be part of this important work and provide the administration with well thought out recommendations on how best to start the school year,” commented Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko.

Since their first meeting on May 28th the eighty member Dearborn Public Schools Reopen Committee has met six times (virtually) as a group and held several additional sub-committee meetings in their efforts to develop a comprehensive recommendation on how best to start the 2020-21 school year. The Reopen Committee was co-chaired by Dearborn Federation of Teachers President Jane Mazza, Association of Dearborn Schools Administrators President David Higgins, and Executive Director of Staff and Student Services Maysam Alie-Bazzi.

The Board of Education will use the August 6th study session to discuss the three possible options recommended by the committee for a return to school. They will also have the opportunity to hear from various sub-committee chairs to gather further details on topics such as transportation, cleaning, scheduling, and other health, safety, and logistic concerns. The three recommendations from the reopen committee are:
Recommended Option 1:
Begin the school year fully online for all students with face-to-face learning labs available for
social-emotional and academic assistance. Details on the scheduling, staffing, and availability of Learning Labs will be determined if the Board approves this option.
If the Board were to approve this option the District would only be making a commitment for online learning until October 1, 2020. Depending on several factors, including but not limited to: local and state health conditions throughout the month of August and September; CDC guidelines; Wayne County Health Department recommendations; and the current orders from the State of Michigan; the District would re-evaluate the plan to determine the feasibility of changing the mode of instruction (full in-person, online, or a blended model that combines both).
Recommended Option 2:
Begin the school year blended (partial online & partial in-person) for elementary students and 100% online for secondary students with learning labs available for social-emotional and academic assistance available to middle and high school students.
Recommended Option 3:
The third recommendation is to begin the school year blended (partial online & partial in person) for elementary and secondary students. It is essential to note that given the current state requirements for schools to hold in-person instruction during Phase 4 of the State’s plan, traditional transportation services may be an issue for this option.

The Board will officially vote on one of these three, or a modified, recommendation on August 10th, 2020 at the Henry Ford College Board of Education meeting. As required by the Governor’s “Return to School Roadmap” (unveiled on June 30th), a Board of Education approved plan will be sent to Wayne County RESA and then to the Michigan Department of Education. The deadline for State approval is August 17, according to the Governor’s
directives. The Governor’s Roadmap provided a framework for the work done by the Dearborn Reopening Committee.

“As educators, we believe that it is best for students to have in-person instruction in front of professional teachers! However, the health and safety of students, staff and the community must be a priority when implementing any plan moving forward,” Superintendent Maleyko added.

Any school reopen plan is subject to change at any time pending the local COVID-19 crisis and any new Executive Orders issued by the Governor. If the State of Michigan moves to Phase 1, 2, or 3, the District must implement full online instruction as ordered by the Governor. If the State is in Phases 4 through 6 the district could allow for in-person instruction but would still need to follow government requirements and recommendations.

Graduation Reminder:

Dear Parents/Guardians of Graduating Seniors – The Class of 2020!

Congratulations parents and guardians of graduating seniors!  We know that you must be very excited and exceptionally proud of your student’s achievement.  We are extremely excited to see you next Monday, July 13th for your Personal and Individualized Graduation Experience!

  • Please remember that it is important to report at your scheduled time so the ceremony can run safely and efficiently.  If you report early or miss your assigned time – you will receive your diploma but will not be able to walk.  Graduates must be appropriately attired for this event.  The young men are to wear a shirt, tie, dress pants and dress shoes, while the young ladies should wear a dress or a dressy outfit and dress shoes. No flip flops or tennis shoes will be allowed.  If a student is not dressed appropriate- they will receive their diploma – but they will not walk. 
  • We want to remind all students that all of these events are considered school sponsored events and the school code of conduct will be enforced. We will continue to maintain high expectations of our seniors throughout the entire ceremony.  In addition, any inappropriate behavior at graduation will result in the delay of the student’s diploma.  Thank you for reinforcing our expectations.

We want to emphasize that graduation is always a formal ceremony.  These events are designed to recognize the students years of hard work, effort and accomplishments. We are asking that everyone involved in our graduation ceremony continue to respect the occasion and join with us in our efforts to have a memorable event.  No air horns, beach balls, balloons or similar items are allowed and they will be taken at the entry door. Please do not bring anything to the ceremony that will detract from the personal recognition of each graduate.  

We are very excited for the senior Class of 2020!  We have been impressed with their leadership and sacrifice during this time. July 13th is their time and we will celebrate them accordingly! Again, thank you for reinforcing our expectations and for supporting your student at this very special time. On behalf of the entire staff, I wish you and our graduates continued success for years to come.  I look forward to seeing you at graduation.  Your continued support to our school as always is greatly appreciated.

Graduation 2020

Dear Graduates & Families,

Edsel Ford’s Graduation Ceremony is scheduled for Monday July 13th.  The ceremony will begin at 1pm and end no later than 5pm.  Each graduate has been assigned a scheduled Group # with a designated time to report that was sent to their school email account. It is imperative that you come during your time slot in order to adhere to our strict social distancing guidelines and time schedule. If you miss your time slot or do not have a mask, you will be asked to return at the end of the ceremony.  Masks must be worn at all times by each graduate and guests upon lining up.  Please bring masks with you or the graduate or guest(s) cannot enter the building. The graduate may remove their mask just prior to their picture being taken inside the auditorium- each graduate must put the mask back on immediately after the picture as they exit.  No Exceptions.

Graduates may bring two guests with them, no more, no exceptions. If more than 3 people are in the car, they may be turned away.

All traffic will enter and exit at the traffic light (Rotunda) to the student parking lot. Students will report in groups of 75 grads with their 2 guests, at their designated time (see student email). One graduate (in their cap and gown) and 2 guests will exit their vehicle parked in the student lot and start social distancing 6’ apart by using the marked spaces from the parking lot to the EF Auditorium doors.

Our administration and staff are looking forward to making this more individualized graduation ceremony as memorable as possible for you and your guests.

Again, please be sure to arrive for your assigned time in order to adhere to our strict social distancing guidelines. These times cannot be changed for any reason. **If you do not report at your assigned time – you will be asked to come back at 4:30.

Additional Information:

  • All graduates will get a chance to walk the stage in cap and gown, have their name read, receive their diploma, be greeted by Administrators, Superintendent, dignitaries, etc. and have their photo taken with their guests in attendance. 
  • Only 2 guests are allowed to attend with the graduate, no exceptions
  • When you arrive, you will park in the student parking lot and make your way to the small gym (making sure families remain 6 ft apart using clearly marked spacing) where you will get a name card and further instructions on the ceremony.
  • The ceremony will be live streamed by the district so family and friends can watch from the safety of their home or smartphone, and you can watch your friends.
  • Student speeches will be pre-recorded and streamed for all to see. One from your class president, and one from the speaker at large who was chosen by a panel of staff judges.
  • There are no tickets required for this event.

Summer Math Practice

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,
According to Johns Hopkins University, the effects of summer learning loss can result in nearly a three-month loss in grade-level equivalency in math and a two-month loss in grade-level equivalency in reading.
As a result of the school shut down, estimates suggest students will return in the fall 2020 with roughly 70% of the learning gains in reading relative to a typical school year. However in mathematics, students are likely to show much smaller learning gains and in some grades, nearly a full year behind what we would observe in normal conditions. In order
to close the summer learning loss gap in math, students should be completing math activities.
Just 1 hour per week or 10 minutes a day can make a difference to combat summer learning loss. Below is a recommended math practice opportunity with two options.

Who: Every high school student (including Incoming 9th graders)
What: Optional Summer Learning for Math
Where: In the comfort of your own home; just 10 minutes a day or 1 hour per week
When: Summer 2020

Below is the summer conditioning that will take place on campus and important information for athletes to follow.  

Conditioning will start 6/17 and run through the entire summer.

Football on the Turf Field.  Monday thru Thursday’s from 9 am – Noon.

Volleyball behind the school by the training room door.  Tuesday thru Fridays from 8:30 am -9:30 am

Boy’s Soccer on the Turf Field.  6/17 and 6/19 from 6 pm – 8 pm and then Starting 6/22 Monday and Thursdays from 6 pm – 8 pm.

Cheerleaders.  Monday Thru Thursdays 10 – 11:30 on the practice grass field and noon – 1:30 on the turf field.


General training session guidelines:

  • Anyone with a temperature above 100.3 will not be allowed to participate.
  • Anyone without a water bottle will not be allowed to participate.
  • These sessions are for “Skills & Drills” only – no physical contact of any kind.
  • Social Distancing must occur at all times (6 feet).
