Some Edsel Ford students experienced riding on a schooner, which is a large three-masted sailboat, and had the BEST time while learning on their field trip today. Students started out by learning various ways to test water quality. Teacher, Ms. Potter had students look at water clarity with a secchi disc, sampled plankton (which they later got to look at under the microscope), and took the water and air temperatures.
After sampling and analyzing, students were able to switch our scientist hats out for sailor hats. The kids hoisted the sails and learned about wind patterns. They also got to steer the boat while learning about sonar and mapping techniques. The students finished off the trip by going to different stations around the boat and learning the history of the Detroit River/ surrounding areas within our watershed. What a great learning experience!
