About Edsel Ford

Edsel Ford High School, located on Rotunda, near Oakwood, in Dearborn, is one of five high schools in the Dearborn Public Schools. Edsel Ford High School was completed in 1955, and the first graduating class was in 1956. The school was tributed to the son of famous Dearbornite, Henry Ford. Henry Ford, for those of you who don't know, was the first person to design a car for the common man, the Model T. His son, Edsel Ford, also became famous for his work in the company his father started.

Edsel did make an impact during his short life, passing away at age 49:

On his community. For years Edsel Ford was one of the largest donors to the Detroit Community Fund.
On the Arts. A talented landscape artist in his own right, Edsel served for many years as President of the Detroit Arts Commission.
On the product line. It was Edsel who influenced his father to take over the bankrupt Lincoln Motor Company, saving one great car from the fate of so many others during the '30's.

On his family. Edsel was the kind of parent who always was there, sharing the joys and problems of his children.  Edsel's final irony was the fact that the car that was intended by his family to do him honor turned out to be a dismal flop.  And, yes, on his father.  In the end, it was Edsel who persuaded the old man to replace the Model "T", to mechanize his windshield wipers, to adopt - finally - hydraulic brakes, to engage in some semblence of long range planning and to make peace with organized labor.

Edsel Ford High School was founded around an interesting idea. The program was formed on the premise that every student deserves to and should be a well rounded individual when leaving high school. This idea, in the eyes of it's creators, needed to be accomplished through the exploration of the arts. Now, 44 years later, the famed "Humanities" program is still leaving its mark on its students.

Sports are important to Edsel students. Rain or shine, night or day, Edsel students come to support their teams. Some of the sports include football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, golf, track, cross country, baseball, tennis, swimming and hockey. Many sports teams have won regional championships and have gone to compete in state competitions. The sports teams make us proud.

A prominent force in the city is Edsel's performing arts department. Encompassing strings, band, jazz, voice, and drama, the performing arts at EFHS have a rich tradition and quality in their performances. Individual student musicians as well as Edsel ensembles have received Superior and Excellent ratings at the district and state levels. The EFHS Drama Club offers students the ability to excel in personal interests not offered in regular class hours. Troupe 1408 of the International Thespian Soceity is an elite group of students who have a special commitment and interest in the performing arts. In the drama department, the students, directors, and parent support staff have earned several DATA Page Awards, including best overall musical in 2007-2008, The Wizard of Oz.

The school hosts numerous events and concerts in its large auditorium, the largest high school auditorium in the city with close to 900 seats.

Edsel Ford's clubs are also quite prestigious in the city. The National Honor Society, Alpha Chapter, is always working hard at community service. Thornley Court continues to provide young students with a close up view of nature. The German and Spanish honors societies are showing teens different cultures and ways, Which also includes International club. The Robotics Club attends the competition in Florida every year. Diversity Club, Icthys Club, and Islamic Club continue to offer students the chance to join other students in the exchange of thoughts and ideas on specific subjects. The International Club, German Club, Investment Club, Art Club, Key Club, are also active groups at Edsel Ford High School.
